When Finland took on Germany, they not only won 5-0 but Teemu Selanne set an Olympic scoring record. His assist on the third goal of the game gave him his 37th Olympic point which pushed him past Russian legend Valeri Kharlamov, Czechoslovakia’s Vlastimil Bubnik and Canada’s Harry ‘Moose’ Watson.

“It is a big honour,” said Selanne. “But it is one of those situations where you really enjoy it more when your career is done and over. If somebody had told me 30 years ago what’s going to happen I would say you’re crazy. I played a long time with a lot of good players and that is what makes it all happen.”
Well said, especially considering the fact that his appearance at the Games was in question – he’s been wearing a plastic face mask to protect a broken jaw. I knew he’d find a way to play, though. He’s got so much Olympic experience (a silver medal from Turin in 2006 and bronze fromt the 1998 Nagano Olympics) and is a real asset to his team.
He’s a tough old guy too (he turns 40 this year). He broke his jaw while he was still recovering from a badly broken left hand a month earlier that required surgery. During the last Olympics, he actually lost three teeth when he was hit in the mouth with a stick but he dressed for every game.
Talk about a true champion!
